Australia’s communications regulator, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), has ordered internet service providers to block access to five more illegal online gambling websites. This brings the total number of blocked sites to 1,279 since the initiative began in late 2019.
The targeted websites – Best Aussie Pokies, winspirit.online, win-spirit.online, winspirit.team, and winspirit1.com – were found to be operating in violation of the Interactive Gambling Act 2001. The ACMA determined that these platforms were providing unlawful gambling services to Australian residents.
Website blocking is one of several strategies employed by the ACMA to combat illegal online gambling. The agency’s enforcement actions have resulted in a significant reduction in the number of unregulated operators; approximately 220 have withdrawn from the Australian market since 2017, when stricter regulations were implemented.
The ACMA strongly advises consumers to exercise caution when using online gambling platforms. Unlicensed websites often lack crucial consumer protections, exposing users to the risk of substantial financial losses and fraudulent activities. Australians can confirm the legitimacy of a gambling operator by checking the official register on the ACMA website. The agency also provides resources and guidance to help individuals safeguard themselves and report suspicious online gambling activity.
The ACMA remains committed to its ongoing efforts to disrupt illegal online gambling operations within Australia and will continue to take decisive action against operators that flout the law.
