GambleAware has introduced a new mobile application, the GambleAware Support Tool, providing free and confidential assistance to individuals seeking to curtail or cease gambling activities. This initiative is a direct response to growing concerns regarding problem gambling in Great Britain.
## Addressing a Significant Need
A recent survey reveals a significant demand for such resources. The study indicates that 29% of 18–24 year-old gamblers in Great Britain desire to reduce or quit gambling, almost double the national average of 15%. This highlights a particularly vulnerable demographic requiring targeted intervention. In total, GambleAware’s 2023 Audience Segmentation study estimates that approximately 4.5 million adults in Great Britain wish to decrease or eliminate their gambling. Critically, 93% of this group indicated a preference for self-directed, informal support mechanisms over formal treatment.
## The GambleAware Support Tool: Features and Functionality
The GambleAware Support Tool is designed to empower users to take control of their gambling habits. The app incorporates features allowing users to monitor their gambling behaviors, establish achievable goals, and receive personalized guidance aligning with the Lower Risk Gambling Guidelines (LRGG). These internationally recognized standards recommend limiting gambling expenditure to no more than 1% of income, restricting gambling to a maximum of four days per month, and avoiding more than two types of gambling per month. Importantly, this is currently the only app in Great Britain integrating the LRGG principles to aid users in mitigating gambling risks.
Beyond self-tracking and goal-setting, the app offers valuable supplemental resources. Users can access informative podcasts and educational materials. Furthermore, the app provides links to more formal support services, if and when required, via GambleAware’s service finder.
## A Call for Improved Support and Responsible Gambling
The launch of the Support Tool follows GambleAware’s recent public appeal for the National Lottery to enhance the visibility of gambling harm support services. The 2024 Annual Treatment and Support Survey underscores this need, with 74% of respondents advocating for clearer signposting to help services by the National Lottery. GambleAware continues to emphasize the heightened risks of gambling harm among neurodivergent individuals and advocates for more consistent responsible gambling standards across all gambling platforms.
Alexia Clifford, GambleAware’s Chief Commercial Officer, commented, “Regardless of whether individuals aim to reduce, manage, or abstain from gambling, the GambleAware Support Tool offers continuous guidance. Early intervention is crucial, and the app is designed to provide timely insights into gambling behaviors.”
